SOLD — FLIPPERS was shot in Port Jefferson out on Long Island. Covering seasons became a big part of the overall theme for the bumpers, so each year, bumpers were added to the arsenal for Associate Director Brian McAloon who decided which bumpers were used in the show. Brian also changed bumpers, in the moment, if a guest referred to something like what they had for dinner and or where they were staying.

SOLD — HOTEL GRAFFITI was shot at the Berkshire Place (a Dunphy Classic) at 52nd and Madison which is where guests of the show stayed. This was shot on the fly, obviously after room service and devoured a few bottles of champagne, of course, to give a feeling of authenticity. Graphic designer Bill Shortridge stood on the bed holding an empty beer can to look like a spray can. This bumper became a classic and was used to punctuate guests who talked about having too much fun in New York. The show title was applied to the master print with purple air brush. The neon graphic was shot from a prop, printed and applied to the print with spray mount.

ICE CREAM TRUCK was the shot of a Good Humor Ice Cream truck in front of the Guggenheim Museum on Fifth Avenue and 88th Street. Most everything shot was at night to feel 'in the moment' and this was a rare exception. 'Late Night' was over painted by hand on to the airbrushed surface formerly occupied by Good Humor. 'with David Letterman' was a sticker applied to the print.

SOLD — LUNCH BOX features Paul Shaffer integrated into a part of everyone's daily life as an essential ingredient along with a banana, a ham sandwich, Twinkies and a Thermos filled with a mystery juice. A hicon portrait of Paul and piano keys were rubbed-on directly to the original print.

PUMPKIN CARVING was a practical effort, testing the skills of the Bumper Team to make the clearest show logo carved in the simplest way on a series of pumpkins. Polariods were shot to perfect the lighting effect of ambient candle light with a bit of fill across the table. In the background, you can see the shot list. 'With David Letterman' was hand drawn and the photo of Dave was glued onto the print. This in one of the very few bumpers that incorporated Dave's image.

UNION SQUARE WALL was shot on the first bumper shoot and appeared on the first episode of Late Night on February 1, 1982.

This wall no longer exists but was at the corner of 14th and Broadway.  Notice other postings for Miles Davis at the Beacon, The Manhattans and The Stylistics at the Beacon, Gang of Four at Roseland and world famous hypnotist Robert Halpern. The 'David Letterman' posters were pre-printed and posted on the actual Union Square wall with a staple gun although the poster of 'with David Letterman' is applied to the master print with glue.
